Your Nervous System is Not Broken. It's Simply Out of Tune.


We live in a world that is incredibly loud.


I don’t just mean the traffic outside your window or the construction down the street. I mean the noise of everything. The constant ping of notifications, the pressure to make endless decisions, the mental load of managing a household, a career, and a life.


We absorb this input all day long, processing, sorting, and holding it.

And eventually, we hit a wall.


We feel the exhaustion settle into our bones. The anxiety starts to hum in the background of every quiet moment. We feel sharp, reactive, or completely drained.


In those moments, it is so easy to slip into self-judgment. We look at our inability to "keep up" and we tell ourselves a story: Something is wrong with me. I am not resilient enough. I am broken.


We treat ourselves like machines that have suffered a mechanical failure. We think we need to be taken apart and fixed.


But I want to offer you a different perspective, one that is both softer and truer: You are not a machine. You are an instrument. And you are not broken - you are simply out of tune.


The Language Barrier


When we feel that internal dissonance - that shaky, overwhelmed feeling - our instinct is often to try and “think/talk” our way out of it.


We try to rationalise the stress. We talk to ourselves (often harshly). We try to use logic to calm a racing heart or a tight chest. We think, “If I just organise my to-do list, I’ll feel better,” or “There is no logical reason to be anxious right now, so stop it.”


But have you ever noticed that when you are in a state of deep overwhelm or in a middle of a panic attack, words often fail?

You can tell yourself to calm down a thousand times, but your heart is still racing. You can logically understand you are safe, but your stomach is still in knots.


This isn’t because you aren’t trying hard enough. It’s because you are speaking the wrong language.


The nervous system doesn’t speak English. It doesn’t speak logic, or reason, or “to-do lists.”

The language of the nervous system is frequency.


We Are Electric Beings


I know it sounds a bit abstract and maybe even "woo-woo", but it is actually quite a grounded approach. At our core, we are vibrational beings. Bio-electricity is the currency of the body. It’s how your heart knows when to beat, how your brain sends signals to your toes, and how your cells communicate with one another.


Every part of you has a rhythm and a resonance (researchers have measured microscopic vibrations produced by living cells and translated that data into sound to study cellular activity). When we are healthy, happy, and grounded, we are in a state of coherence. Our internal frequencies are humming along in harmony.


But stress is essentially noise. It is a chaotic frequency that disrupts our natural rhythm.

When we are exposed to chronic stress - that low-level, high-alert state that so many of us live in - our internal instrument starts to hold that tension. The strings get too tight. The melody gets distorted.


This is why talk therapy or logical reasoning sometimes hits a wall when it comes to trauma or deep stress. You are trying to use a "top-down" approach (the brain) to fix a "bottom-up" problem (the body).


To truly settle the system, we have to speak its native language. We have to communicate in vibration.


Re-Tuning vs. Fixing


This shift in perspective changes everything.


If you view your stress as a personal failure, the solution feels like punishment. You try to force yourself to be better.


But if you view your stress as a frequency distortion, the solution becomes about care. You don’t need to be fixed; you need to be re-tuned.


This is the heart of Sound Healing. It is the practice of introducing a clear, coherent frequency to the body, inviting your nervous system to sync up with it. It bypasses the busy, analytical mind (the part of you that wants to worry and plan) and speaks directly to your cells.


It says to your body, in a language it understands: “Here is the original, harmonic rhythm. It is safe to come back to this.”


It’s not about forcing the anxiety away. It’s about offering a stronger, steadier vibration that allows your body to release the static it has been holding onto. It's about entrainment.


Bringing the Tuning Home


While I love the deep immersion of a studio sound healing session, the reality is that we can’t live in the studio. We have to go back to our lives, our jobs, and our families. We need ways to "tune up" in the messy middle of a Tuesday afternoon.


This is why I am so passionate about practical tools, specifically Tuning Forks.

If a sound bath is a full-system reset, a tuning fork is your daily maintenance. It is a way to spot-treat the dissonance as soon as you feel it rising.


I wrote in depth about this in my guide to Tuning Forks, but the premise is simple: weighted tuning forks allow you to apply vibration directly to the body.


When you trace your Vagus Nerve with a weighted fork when you're unsettled, place it on your sternum when you feel anxious, or on your sacrum when you feel ungrounded, you are manually introducing a coherent frequency to that area. You are interrupting the chaotic signal of stress and replacing it with a signal of calm.


It is a moment of re-tuning that takes less than a minute, but can completely shift the trajectory of your day.


Honouring Your Rhythm


So, the next time you feel the noise of the world getting too loud, or you feel that familiar tightness in your chest, try to catch yourself before you spiral into the story that you are “broken.”

Take a breath. Acknowledge the incredible amount of input your system is processing and remind yourself of the truth:

My instrument is just a little out of tune.

You don’t need more pressure. You don’t need more words. You just need to find your harmonic frequency again.
